Sci. 38(4): 602-611 (October 2003) Abstract We conducted seven experiments in stands of mature lodgepole pine in southern B r i t i s h C o l u m b i a t o e l u c i d a t e t h e r o l e o f h o s t volatiles i n t h e s e m i o c h e m i c a l e c o l o g y o f t h e p i n e engraver, Ips pini (Say) (Coleoptera: Scolytidae), with particular reference to the behavioral responses of predators and competing species of bark beetles. Our results demonstrated that the attraction of Ips pini and the bark beetle predators Lasconofus complex LeConte (Colydiidae), Thanasimus undafulus (Say) (Cleridae) and a Corticeus sp. (Tenebrionidae) were increased by 3-carene. In contrast, attraction of the bark beetle Pityogenes knecbfeli Swaine (Scolytidae) to ipsdienol was interrupted by 3-carene and a-pinene. Attraction of L. complex to ipsdienol was increased by r-terpinene, a compound attractive to the mountain pine beetle, Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins (Scolytidae). Terpinolene interrupted the attraction of 1. pini t o i p s d i e n o l .

Dose-Dependent Pheromone Responses of Ips pini, Orthotomicus latidens (Coleoptera: Scolytidae), and Associates in Stands of Lodgepole Pine
We conducted four behavioral choice tests in stands of mature lodgepole pine in British Columbia, from 1988 to 1991, to determine the dose-dependent responses of Orthotortzicw 1atid;ns (1,eConte) and Ips pini (Say) to their respective pheromones. Dose-dependent responses were exhibited by I. pini to (5)-ipsdienol and lanierone, with trap catches directly proportional to pheromone release rates....

The effect of pheromones of Hopkins on the at t ract ion of Ips pini (Say) to its pheromone, ipsdienol, was investigated in stands of lodgepole pine. The mixture of cisand trans-verbenol significantly reduced catches of 1. pini in t raps baited with ipsdienol at three locations in British Columbia. exo-Brevicomin had no effect on catches of f. pini, irrespective of the enantiomeric composition ...

We determined the response of the small southern pine engraver, Ips avulsus (Eichhoff); eastern fivespined ips, Ips grandicollis (Eichhoff); sixspined ips, Ips calligraphus (Germar); and pine engraver, Ips pini (Say) to the pheromones (+/-)-ipsenol, (+/-)-ipsdienol, and lanierone in the southeastern United States. Catches of I. avulsus and I. grandicollis to baited multiple-funnel traps were in...
متن کاملImproved Population Monitoring of Bark Beetles and Predators by Incorporating Disparate Behavioral Responses to Semiochemicals
Estimating populations of both pest and natural enemy species is important in the planning and implementationof biological control. For example, synthetic pheromone lures are used to sample bark beetles, and sometimes their predators, in forest ecosystems. However, insect attraction to natural pheromone sources may differ from attraction to synthetic pheromone lures. Moreover, these differences...
متن کاملPOPULATION ECOLOGY Components of Antagonism and Mutualism in Ips pini–Fungal Interactions: Relationship to a Life History of Colonizing Highly Stressed and Dead Trees
Efforts to describe the complex relationships between bark beetles and the ophiostomatoid (stain) fungi they transport have largely resulted in a dichotomous classiÞcation. These symbioses have been viewed as either mutualistic (i.e., fungi help bark beetles colonize living trees by overcoming tree defenses or by providing nutrients after colonization in return for transport to a host) or antag...
